Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Povidone-iodine 2% ophthalmic solution is an experimental antiseptic eye drop formulation being investigated by Farabi Eye Hospital for the treatment of adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis. Povidone-iodine (PVP-I) is a broad-spectrum microbicide that works by releasing free iodine, which penetrates microbial cell walls and oxidizes essential components such as proteins, nucleotides, and fatty acids, leading to rapid inactivation of pathogens including adenovirus. While higher concentrations (typically 5-10%) are standard for pre-operative ophthalmic antisepsis, this 2% formulation is designed to provide therapeutic antiviral activity while minimizing toxicity to the corneal epithelium, which is a common concern with more concentrated iodine solutions.
