Overview

PP1493 is a bacteriophage cocktail developed by Phaxiam Therapeutics (formed by the merger of Pherecydes Pharma and Erytech Pharma) for the treatment of infections caused by *Staphylococcus aureus*, specifically targeting prosthetic joint infections (PJI). The therapy consists of a cocktail of three lytic bacteriophages selected for their broad host range and high activity against various *S. aureus* strains, including methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA). Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect and kill bacteria without affecting human cells or the commensal microbiome. PP1493 is designed to be used as an adjunct to standard-of-care surgical debridement and antibiotic therapy, particularly in cases where bacterial biofilms make conventional antibiotics less effective. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials, including the Phase 2 PHAGEINLY study.
