PPI-1019, also known as Apan, is a synthetic peptide developed as a neuroprotective agent for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. It is the lead compound in a series of β‑amyloid-derived peptides designed to interact with and inhibit the aggregation of beta‑amyloid (Aβ) peptide, thereby reducing its associated nerve cell toxicity. The drug facilitates clearance of Aβ from the brain by increasing its levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which may help alter disease progression. Preclinical and clinical studies demonstrated that PPI‑1019 can cross the blood-brain barrier and was found to be safe and well tolerated in phase I/II trials. However, development for Alzheimer's disease was discontinued after early-phase clinical testing[1][2][3][4][5][6].
