Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PPSV23 + Act-HIB is a vaccine combination investigated by Uppsala University for the prevention of post-traumatic meningitis in patients following neurotrauma or neurosurgery, such as those with basilar skull fractures. The combination consists of two distinct vaccines: PPSV23 (Pneumovax 23), a 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine that induces a T-cell-independent immune response against *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, and Act-HIB, a conjugate vaccine that induces a T-cell-dependent immune response against *Haemophilus influenzae* type b (Hib). The clinical study (NCT02806284) specifically evaluated the timing of administration (early, within 10 days, versus late, at least 3 weeks after injury) to determine the optimal window for mounting an effective immune response in patients with compromised skull integrity who are at high risk for bacterial meningitis.
