PR1P (Prominin-1 peptide) is a novel 12-amino acid peptide therapeutic being developed by Orpheus BioScience for the prevention and treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). Derived from the extracellular VEGF-binding domain of the stem cell protein Prominin-1 (also known as CD133), PR1P acts by binding to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Unlike traditional anti-VEGF therapies that inhibit VEGF activity, PR1P stabilizes VEGF from proteolytic degradation to maintain appropriate levels during critical phases of retinal vascular development. This stabilization is intended to prevent the initial vascular regression and subsequent pathological neovascularization that characterize ROP. The drug is currently in preclinical development and is positioned as a prophylactic treatment for premature infants requiring oxygen supplementation.
