Overview
Practolol is a selective beta blocker (beta‑1 adrenergic receptor antagonist) that was used in the emergency treatment of cardiac arrhythmias and angina pectoris. It acts by competitively inhibiting catecholamines such as epinephrine and norepinephrine at beta‑1 adrenergic receptors in the heart and vascular smooth muscle, leading to decreased heart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure. Practolol was developed by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). Its use has been discontinued due to severe adverse effects including ocular toxicity (keratoconjunctivitis sicca), rashes, mucosal ulceration, peritonitis, pleurisy, cochlear damage, and secretory otitis media[1][2][3].
