Overview

Prademagene zamikeracel (ZEVASKYN) is an autologous, gene-corrected epidermal sheet therapy developed by Abeona Therapeutics for the treatment of wounds in patients with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB). The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own keratinocytes, which are then transduced ex vivo with a replication-deficient gamma-retroviral vector to deliver a functional copy of the COL7A1 gene. This gene encodes type VII collagen, the primary component of anchoring fibrils that secure the epidermis to the dermis. The corrected cells are expanded into sheets and surgically applied to chronic wounds to promote healing and reduce pain. It was approved by the FDA in April 2025 as the first autologous cell-based gene therapy for RDEB.
