Overview

Pramiracetam is a nootropic agent in the racetam family, developed to enhance cognitive function. It was discovered by scientists at Parke-Davis (then part of Warner-Lambert) in the late 1970s. Pramiracetam is primarily used for treating memory and attention deficits associated with neurodegenerative and vascular dementias, particularly in aging populations. Its mechanism of action involves increasing high-affinity choline uptake in the hippocampus, thereby enhancing acetylcholine synthesis and utilization—critical processes for memory formation and cognition. Additionally, it may improve cerebral blood flow by increasing nitric oxide activity, further supporting cognitive enhancement. Pramiracetam has been studied for Alzheimer's disease, as an adjunct to electroconvulsive therapy for major depressive disorder, and to restore cognitive function after stroke or traumatic brain injury[1][6][8].
