Overview

Pramlintide + insulin is a combination therapy used to manage blood glucose in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who have not achieved adequate glycemic control with insulin alone. Pramlintide is a synthetic analog of the human hormone amylin, which is co-secreted with insulin by pancreatic beta cells. The combination works synergistically: pramlintide slows gastric emptying, suppresses postprandial glucagon secretion, and increases satiety, while insulin facilitates cellular glucose uptake and reduces blood glucose levels. This dual approach helps prevent post-meal hyperglycemia and may contribute to weight loss. Pramlintide was developed by Amylin Pharmaceuticals[3][4][5][6].
