This intervention is a combination therapy consisting of pramlintide acetate and a fast-acting formulation of insulin aspart (Fiasp), specifically studied by McGill University for use in a closed-loop artificial pancreas system. Pramlintide acetate is a synthetic analog of human amylin, a neuroendocrine hormone co-secreted with insulin that is deficient in patients with type 1 diabetes. It functions as an amylin receptor agonist to delay gastric emptying, suppress postprandial glucagon secretion, and enhance satiety. Insulin aspart is a rapid-acting insulin analog that regulates glucose metabolism by binding to insulin receptors. The combination is delivered in a fixed ratio (e.g., 10 μg pramlintide per 1 unit of insulin) via an automated delivery algorithm to improve glycemic control and eliminate the need for precise carbohydrate counting in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.
