Overview
Prasugrel is an oral antiplatelet agent of the thienopyridine class, used to reduce the risk of thrombotic cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) who are undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). It is a prodrug that irreversibly inhibits the P2Y12 ADP receptor on platelets, thereby preventing platelet activation and aggregation. The active metabolite blocks ADP-mediated activation of the glycoprotein GPIIb/IIIa complex, reducing clot formation. Prasugrel is typically administered alongside aspirin[1][3][8].
