Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pravastatina Cinfamed is a generic formulation of pravastatin sodium, a member of the statin class of lipid-lowering agents. It functions as a competitive inhibitor of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway. By inhibiting this enzyme in the liver, it reduces intracellular cholesterol levels, leading to an upregulation of LDL receptors on hepatocyte surfaces and increased clearance of circulating LDL-cholesterol. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of primary hypercholesterolemia and the prevention of cardiovascular events in patients with established atherosclerotic disease or at high risk. This specific product is manufactured by Laboratorios Cinfa and has been utilized in clinical research conducted by institutions such as the Fundacion Para La Investigacion Biomedica Del Hospital Universitario La Paz.
