Overview

This combination regimen consists of the anthelmintic praziquantel, iron supplementation, and artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT). It was evaluated by the DBL - Institute for Health Research and Development in a clinical study (NCT00153140) to assess the impact of treating schistosomiasis, malaria, and iron deficiency on anaemia in school-aged children in Kenya. Praziquantel targets *Schistosoma* parasites by increasing membrane permeability to calcium, leading to parasite paralysis. Iron is provided to address nutritional deficiency and support hemoglobin synthesis. ACT is the standard of care for *Plasmodium falciparum* malaria, utilizing artemisinin derivatives to generate reactive oxygen species that damage parasite components.
