Prazosin is a small molecule drug primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), and nightmares associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It acts as an α1-adrenergic receptor antagonist, leading to vasodilation and reduced peripheral vascular resistance, which lowers blood pressure. It also relaxes smooth muscle in the prostate and bladder neck, improving urine flow. The mechanism for its effect on PTSD-related nightmares is not fully understood. Common side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and palpitations; serious side effects may include orthostatic hypotension and depression[1][2][3].
