PRD236256 is an investigational small molecule developed by UCB for the treatment of epilepsy. It functions as a ligand for the synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A), a protein integral to the regulation of neurotransmitter release in the central nervous system. SV2A has been successfully targeted by previous UCB anti-seizure medications, including levetiracetam and brivaracetam. PRD236256 is designed to provide potent and selective modulation of SV2A to reduce the neuronal hyperexcitability that characterizes epileptic seizures. The drug is currently being evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials to assess its safety, pharmacokinetics, and efficacy in patients with epilepsy.
