Prednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid used to treat a wide range of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions such as arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, ulcerative colitis, allergic disorders, blood disorders, skin diseases, certain cancers (including leukemia and lymphoma), and to prevent organ rejection after transplantation. It works primarily by mimicking the effects of cortisol—a hormone produced by the adrenal glands—thereby reducing inflammation and suppressing immune system activity. Mechanistically, prednisolone binds to glucocorticoid receptors in cells; this complex then translocates into the nucleus where it alters gene expression to inhibit proinflammatory cytokine production and reduce migration of immune cells like leukocytes[1][2][3][4][5]. Prednisolone was first approved for medical use in 1955[2][5].
