Overview

Prednisolone + sulfasalazine is a combination of two small molecule drugs used primarily in the management of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, most notably Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Prednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid that exerts anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by modulating gene expression through the glucocorticoid receptor, thereby reducing inflammation and immune activity. Sulfasalazine is an anti-inflammatory agent that acts locally in the colon to reduce inflammation, likely through inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and other mechanisms involving suppression of inflammatory cytokines. The combination has been studied for its ability to accelerate clinical improvement in active Crohn's disease compared to monotherapy with either agent[1][2][3][4]. In rheumatoid arthritis, both agents may be used together as part of multi-drug regimens for enhanced disease control[5].
