The glucocorticoid receptor (GR), also known as NR3C1, is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily of ligand-dependent transcription factors. It mediates the physiological and pharmacological actions of glucocorticoids, which are steroid hormones essential for life and involved in regulating numerous processes such as metabolism, development, immune response, inflammation, and stress adaptation.
Ligand binding induces a conformational change, dissociation of chaperone proteins, translocation to the nucleus, and either transactivation via GREs or transrepression/tethering via interaction with other transcription factors.
