Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The combination of prednisolone and heparin is used in specific medical contexts, notably in fertility treatments. Research indicates this combination may improve pregnancy and implantation rates in women with previously unexplained, failed implantation during *in vitro* fertilization (IVF) or ICSI procedures [1]. Prednisolone is a corticosteroid acting as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agent, used for various conditions. It is metabolized to its active form, which functions as a glucocorticoid agonist [3]. Heparin is an anticoagulant used to prevent blood clotting and treat thrombosis [5]. It works by helping blood flow smoothly [4]. A study found that a regimen of oral prednisolone (20 mg/day) starting on day 1 of ovarian stimulation and low molecular weight heparin (1 mg/kg/day) starting one day post-oocyte retrieval significantly improved pregnancy and implantation rates in women with prior failed ICSI attempts [1]. Side effects have been reported with combined use, including rare cases like priapism [2]. Both drugs have their own side effect profiles: heparin can cause bleeding, thrombocytopenia, and hyperkalemia [4]; prednisolone can lead to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis suppression and increased infection susceptibility [3]. This combination is primarily applied in specific clinical protocols rather than being a general, standard combination therapy.
