Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Predocol is an oral, controlled-release formulation of prednisolone metasulfobenzoate (specifically the sodium salt), a poorly absorbed corticosteroid derivative. Developed by Flexpharm Ltd and Enterotech Ltd, Predocol is designed with a pH-dependent Eudragit-L coating to target the delivery of the active glucocorticoid directly to the colon, minimizing systemic absorption and associated side effects such as bone loss and adrenal suppression. It is primarily investigated for the induction of remission in patients with active ulcerative colitis. In clinical trials, Predocol has demonstrated comparable efficacy to conventional oral prednisolone but with a significantly improved safety profile and fewer steroid-related adverse events.
