Overview

Prednisolone and methylprednisolone are both synthetic corticosteroids used primarily for their anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. They act by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, modulating gene expression, and suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators. Methylprednisolone is a methylated derivative of prednisolone, making it slightly more potent. Both drugs are indicated for a wide range of conditions including autoimmune diseases (such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus), allergic reactions, asthma, severe skin disorders (like eczema and psoriasis), multiple sclerosis exacerbations, colitis, endocrine disorders, and more. Methylprednisolone is available in oral tablet form as well as injectable preparations for rapid or localized effect; prednisolone is typically administered orally[1][3][5][6].
