Preflucel (Baxter International Inc.)

Preflucel is an inactivated, whole-virion influenza vaccine produced using a proprietary Vero cell-culture technology rather than traditional embryonated chicken eggs. Developed by Baxter (with clinical trials often sponsored by Alachua Government Services, Inc.), this manufacturing platform utilizes a continuous mammalian cell line, which allows for a more rapid and scalable production process during pandemic surges and provides a safe alternative for individuals with egg allergies. The vaccine contains inactivated whole virus particles of the influenza A and B strains recommended for the specific season. Although it received marketing authorization in several European countries around 2010, it was subsequently withdrawn from the market by Baxter following reports of a higher-than-expected frequency of non-serious systemic adverse reactions, such as fever and chills, in certain batches.
