Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Prefuvir mesylate is a small molecule nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) and a prodrug of tenofovir, developed by Hefei Life Science Research Institute for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It is designed to be more stable in plasma than tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), allowing for more efficient delivery of the active metabolite, tenofovir diphosphate, to hepatocytes. This targeted delivery aims to achieve potent antiviral efficacy at lower doses, thereby minimizing systemic exposure to tenofovir and reducing the risk of renal impairment and bone mineral density loss. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials and real-world observational studies in China.
