Pregnant mare serum gonadotropin is a **natural glycoprotein hormone** extracted from the serum of pregnant mares and composed of two subunits (alpha and beta)[2][3]. It is also known as equine chorionic gonadotropin (eCG). PMSG exhibits both **follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)-like and luteinizing hormone (LH)-like activity** in most species except horses, where it acts primarily with LH-like activity[2][3][4]. In veterinary practice, it is used mainly for the **stimulation of ovarian follicular development, induction and synchronization of estrus and ovulation**, and to improve fertility in animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and laboratory rodents[2][3][4][6][7]. The hormone stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles, induces ovulation, and is frequently used in superovulation protocols for assisted reproduction and embryo transfer in animals[1][3][6][7].
