Pregrel

Pregrel (clopidogrel resinate) is a novel polymeric salt formulation of the antiplatelet agent clopidogrel. It is a resinate complex of the (+)-clopidogrel optical isomer bound to a water-soluble cation exchange resin via sulfonic acid groups. Developed by Dong-A ST, this formulation was designed to enhance physicochemical and gastrointestinal stability compared to the conventional clopidogrel bisulfate (Plavix). Like other clopidogrel formulations, Pregrel acts as a prodrug whose active metabolite irreversibly antagonizes the P2Y12 adenosine diphosphate (ADP) receptor on platelets, thereby inhibiting platelet aggregation and reducing the risk of atherothrombotic events. It was approved by the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) in 2007 and has been evaluated in clinical trials led by investigators such as Seung-Jung Park for the treatment of patients with coronary artery disease undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
