Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PreLipid is a fixed-dose combination nutritional supplement (nutraceutical) developed by Abbott Healthcare for the management of hyperlipidemia and borderline dyslipidemia. The formulation consists of red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus), grape seed extract (Vitis vinifera), and black pepper extract (Piper nigrum). The primary active component in red yeast rice is monacolin K, which acts as a natural HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor to reduce endogenous cholesterol synthesis. Grape seed extract provides antioxidant support through its high concentration of proanthocyanidins, while black pepper extract (containing piperine) is included to enhance the bioavailability of the other ingredients. Clinical studies, including post-marketing assessments in India, have demonstrated its efficacy in improving lipid profiles by reducing total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglycerides, and its safety for primordial prevention in patients with mildly elevated lipid levels.
