Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Premens is a medical herbal product developed by Max Zeller Söhne AG (Zeller Medical AG) for the treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menstrual cycle disturbances. The active ingredient is a dry extract of *Vitex agnus-castus* (chaste tree) fruit, with each film-coated tablet containing 20 mg of the extract. Premens is indicated for both physical and psychological symptoms of PMS, including breast tension (mastodynia), mood swings, irritability, and headaches. Its primary mechanism of action involves dopaminergic activity; constituents of the extract act as agonists at dopamine D2 receptors in the anterior pituitary, which inhibits the secretion of prolactin. This reduction in prolactin levels helps address latent hyperprolactinemia, a common underlying factor in PMS symptoms. The product is approved and marketed in Switzerland as a medicinal herbal preparation.
