Overview

The AS03-adjuvanted monovalent H5N1 influenza vaccine, developed by GSK Biologicals, is an inactivated split-virion vaccine designed for pandemic preparedness against H5N1 avian influenza. It consists of H5N1 hemagglutinin antigens (derived from strains such as A/Vietnam/1194/04 or A/Indonesia/05/2005) combined with the proprietary AS03 adjuvant system, which contains squalene, DL-α-tocopherol, and polysorbate 80. The vaccine works by inducing hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibodies against the H5N1 hemagglutinin protein, providing protection against the virus. It was approved by the EMA in 2011 under the brand name Pumarix for use in a prepandemic situation.
