prepandemic influenza vaccine (h5n1) (surface antigen, inactivated, adjuvanted)

Aflunov is a prepandemic monovalent, subunit, inactivated influenza vaccine designed to provide active immunization against the H5N1 subtype of Influenza A virus (avian influenza). Originally developed by Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics and now managed by CSL Seqirus, the vaccine contains 7.5 μg of hemagglutinin (HA) surface antigen derived from the A/Vietnam/1194/2004 (H5N1) strain. It is adjuvanted with MF59, an oil-in-water emulsion, to enhance the immune response by promoting the recruitment and activation of antigen-presenting cells. The vaccine is indicated for use in individuals aged 6 months and older to prepare for or respond to an H5N1 pandemic. It received European Union marketing authorization in 2011.
