Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Preparation H is an over-the-counter medication used for the treatment of hemorrhoids. It works through multiple mechanisms depending on the formulation. The primary active ingredients in most versions include phenylephrine hydrochloride (a vasoconstrictor that narrows blood vessels to reduce swelling) and pramoxine hydrochloride (a local anesthetic that relieves pain and itching). Some formulations also contain protectants like glycerin and petrolatum that form a protective barrier to prevent irritation. Originally developed by American Home Products (later Wyeth, now Pfizer), it has become one of the world's best-selling hemorrhoid treatments.
