Overview

Preprocessed thawed autologous fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) is a microbiome-based intervention used as a placebo comparator in clinical research, specifically in the COMEBACK trial (NCT03691987) for chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME). Developed by the University Hospital of North Norway, it involves the collection of a participant's own feces, which is then preprocessed, frozen, and thawed before being administered via enema. The goal of using an autologous preparation as a placebo is to control for the administration procedure and the presence of fecal matter while ensuring that no foreign microbiota are introduced, thereby isolating the effects of donor-derived microbiota in the active treatment arm.
