The PreS1 VLP vaccine is a recombinant vaccine platform that utilizes virus-like particles (VLPs) to display the PreS1 domain of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen. Unlike conventional HBV vaccines that primarily target the 'S' antigen, this approach focuses on the PreS1 region, which is essential for the virus's attachment to the sodium taurocholate cotransporting polypeptide (NTCP) receptor on human hepatocytes. By mimicking the viral structure without containing infectious genetic material, the VLP induces a robust immune response, specifically generating neutralizing antibodies that prevent viral entry and infection. This platform is being developed both as a prophylactic measure to provide broader protection than standard vaccines and as a therapeutic vaccine aimed at achieving a functional cure for chronic Hepatitis B by stimulating T-cell responses and clearing infected cells.
