Prevenar (also known as Prevnar or PCV-7) is a 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine originally developed by Wyeth (now part of Pfizer). It is designed to prevent invasive diseases caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae*, including pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia. The vaccine consists of capsular polysaccharides from seven pneumococcal serotypes individually conjugated to a non-toxic recombinant variant of diphtheria toxin known as CRM197. This conjugation converts the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigens into T-cell dependent antigens, enhancing immunogenicity and inducing immunological memory, particularly in infants and young children. In a specific Phase 4 clinical trial led by Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Hospital, Prevenar was evaluated as part of a sequential immunization strategy alongside the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine (PPV-23) in preschool children with asthma to assess safety and immune response.
