Preventic

Preventic is a veterinary ectoparasiticide product manufactured by Virbac, specifically designed for the prevention and control of tick infestations in dogs. The active ingredient is amitraz, a formamidine compound that functions as a potent neurotoxin against ticks. Amitraz acts as an agonist at octopamine receptors and as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) within the tick's central nervous system. This mechanism leads to the paralysis of tick mouthparts, preventing feeding and causing attached ticks to detach from the host within 48 hours. Preventic is available in two primary formulations: a tick collar containing 9% amitraz, which provides sustained protection for up to 90 days, and a topical solution that also addresses fleas and lice. It is indicated for the control of several tick species, including the American dog tick, Lone Star tick, Gulf Coast tick, and brown dog tick, thereby reducing the transmission risk of tick-borne pathogens such as those causing Lyme disease, babesiosis, and rickettsiosis.
