Prevnar

Prevnar is a 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) developed to provide active immunization against invasive disease caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. It consists of purified capsular polysaccharides from seven pneumococcal serotypes (4, 6B, 9V, 14, 18C, 19F, and 23F), each individually conjugated to a non-toxic variant of the diphtheria toxin known as CRM197. This conjugation process is critical as it transforms the polysaccharide from a T-cell independent antigen into a T-cell dependent antigen, thereby inducing a more robust immune response, immunological memory, and efficacy in infants and immunocompromised populations. While originally developed by Wyeth (now Pfizer), this specific clinical context involves research conducted by the Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine to evaluate the vaccine's performance in HIV-infected individuals compared to traditional polysaccharide vaccines.
