Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Prevnar 13 is a 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine developed by Wyeth (a subsidiary of Pfizer). It contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 13 different serotypes of *Streptococcus pneumoniae* (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, and 23F), each individually conjugated to a non-toxic diphtheria CRM197 carrier protein. This conjugation converts the T-cell independent polysaccharide antigens into T-cell dependent antigens, enhancing immunogenicity, particularly in infants and young children. The vaccine is indicated for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease, pneumonia, and otitis media caused by the included serotypes.
