Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Prevnar 13 (Pneumococcal 13-valent Conjugate Vaccine) is a sterile suspension of saccharides from the capsular antigens of 13 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, and 23F). Each serotype is individually conjugated to a non-toxic variant of diphtheria toxin known as CRM197, which serves as a carrier protein. This conjugation process is critical as it converts the T cell-independent polysaccharide antigens into T cell-dependent antigens, thereby inducing a more robust immune response, particularly in infants, and establishing long-term immunological memory. Developed by Pfizer, the vaccine is indicated for the prevention of invasive pneumococcal disease (including sepsis, meningitis, and bacteremia) and pneumococcal pneumonia caused by the included serotypes. It is widely utilized in pediatric and adult populations, including individuals with immunocompromising conditions such as HIV.
