Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Prevnar 20 is a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine that provides active immunization against invasive disease and pneumonia caused by *Streptococcus pneumoniae*. It contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 20 different *S. pneumoniae* serotypes (1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 8, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B [de-OAc],18C,19A ,19F ,22F ,23F ,33F), each individually conjugated to the non-toxic diphtheria CRM197 carrier protein and adsorbed onto an aluminum phosphate adjuvant[1][2][5][6]. The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against these serotypes through T-cell dependent mechanisms; this enhances opsonophagocytosis and killing of *S. pneumoniae*[7][8]. Developed for use in both children (from six weeks of age) and adults for prevention of invasive pneumococcal diseases such as bacteremia/sepsis and meningitis as well as non-invasive diseases like pneumonia and otitis media[5][7].
