Prezatide copper is a complex of the tripeptide prezatide (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine or GHK) and a copper ion. It is primarily used in cosmetic products for skin and hair due to its ability to improve skin elasticity, density, and firmness; reduce fine lines and wrinkles; decrease photodamage; and increase keratinocyte proliferation. Prezatide also displays antioxidant and angiogenic effects, modulates tissue remodeling in injury by increasing the synthesis of type I collagen and glycosaminoglycan, upregulating matrix metalloproteinase-2 as well as tissue inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases-1/2. Its antioxidant activity is thought to be related to supplying copper for superoxide dismutase activity. Prezatide promotes angiogenesis at injury sites via activation of growth factors such as VEGF and TGF-beta. It has anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines and blocking iron release during injury. The precise mechanism—whether due to the peptide itself or its role in localizing/transporting copper—is not fully understood[1][3][4][5][7][8].
