Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Prifinium bromide is a synthetic quaternary ammonium compound that functions as a muscarinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist. It is primarily utilized as an antispasmodic agent to alleviate smooth muscle spasms in the gastrointestinal tract, biliary system, and urinary tract. By competitively inhibiting the binding of acetylcholine to muscarinic receptors on smooth muscle cells, it reduces muscle tone and hypermotility, thereby relieving pain associated with conditions such as gastritis, peptic ulcers, cholelithiasis, and ureterolithiasis. It is also indicated for the symptomatic relief of dysmenorrhea and infantile colic. Originally developed by Fujisawa Pharmaceutical (now Astellas Pharma), it is available in oral and parenteral formulations in various international markets. While some contexts may associate it with other anticholinergic agents like phencynonate hydrochloride, prifinium bromide is a distinct chemical entity with a well-established profile in treating smooth muscle disorders.
