Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Primrose root tincture is a herbal medicinal product derived from the dried roots and rhizomes of *Primula veris* or *Primula elatior*. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of acute bronchitis and respiratory catarrh, where it serves as an effective expectorant. The therapeutic activity is driven by triterpene saponins, notably primula acid A, which exert a secretolytic effect. These saponins irritate the gastric mucosa, which reflexively stimulates the vagus nerve to increase the production of liquid bronchial secretions. This process thins thick mucus and facilitates its removal from the airways. Engelhard Arzneimittel is a prominent developer and manufacturer of this preparation, which is widely used in European markets for cough and cold symptoms.
