Overview

Primycin is a naturally occurring antibiotic complex originally isolated from the bacterium *Saccharothrix primycina* (formerly *Streptomyces primycini*). It is a macrolide-like antibiotic, often characterized as a lipopeptide or a non-polyene macrolide, that exerts its antibacterial effect by disrupting the integrity of bacterial cell membranes. This action leads to increased permeability, leakage of essential intracellular components, and subsequent cell death. Developed and marketed by Pannon Pharma, primycin is primarily used in topical formulations for the treatment of various skin infections, including pyoderma, infected wounds, and burns. It is particularly noted for its efficacy against Gram-positive pathogens, including methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA), and has a low propensity for the development of bacterial resistance due to its membrane-targeting mechanism.
