Overview

Prismasate is a sterile, electrolyte-containing solution designed for use as a dialysate or replacement fluid during continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Manufactured by Baxter, it is primarily used in the intensive care unit for patients with acute kidney injury or chronic renal failure who require continuous dialysis. The solution works by facilitating the removal of metabolic waste products, such as urea and creatinine, and balancing electrolytes and acid-base status through diffusion and convection across a semipermeable membrane. Prismasate formulations typically contain various concentrations of sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, using lactate as a buffering agent to maintain physiological pH. Some versions are notably dextrose-free, which can be advantageous in managing patients with hyperglycemia but may conversely lead to starvation ketosis in specific clinical contexts.
