Prismasol

Prismasol is a sterile, pre-mixed electrolyte and bicarbonate solution used as a replacement fluid or dialysate in Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). Developed by Baxter (and managed by its kidney care spinoff, Vantive Health), it is indicated for pediatric and adult patients to replace plasma volume removed by ultrafiltration and to correct electrolyte and acid-base imbalances. It is also used in cases of drug poisoning to facilitate the removal of dialyzable substances. The solution typically comes in a dual-chamber bag containing electrolytes such as sodium, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and chloride, along with a bicarbonate buffer and sometimes glucose. These components are mixed immediately before administration to the extracorporeal circuit to maintain physiological homeostasis in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury.
