PRO-301 is an inhaled formulation of carbon monoxide (iCO) being developed by Proterris for the prevention of Delayed Graft Function (DGF) in kidney transplant recipients. The therapeutic approach leverages the cytoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic properties of carbon monoxide to mitigate ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), which is a primary cause of DGF. By delivering low doses of carbon monoxide via inhalation, the drug aims to activate protective cellular pathways, such as the induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and the modulation of mitochondrial function, thereby improving graft survival and function post-transplantation. PRO-301 is currently in Phase 2 development.
