Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PRO-4 is a multi-strain probiotic formulation consisting of four specific bacterial strains: *Bifidobacterium lactis*, *Lactobacillus acidophilus*, *Lactobacillus casei*, and *Lactobacillus rhamnosus*. It is primarily being investigated by researchers at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital for its therapeutic potential in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), particularly those with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). The rationale for its use is based on the "gut-heart axis" hypothesis, which suggests that heart failure is associated with gut dysbiosis and increased intestinal permeability, leading to systemic inflammation. PRO-4 aims to restore microbial balance, improve intestinal barrier function, and reduce the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and endotoxins, thereby potentially improving cardiac function and exercise tolerance.
