Proanthocyanidin B2 is a natural polyphenolic compound classified as a B-type proanthocyanidin dimer, chemically consisting of two (−)-epicatechin units joined by a 4β→8 interflavan bond[1][3][4]. It is found in high concentrations in certain plant sources such as apple, grape seed, cinnamon bark, litchi pericarp, and red wine[1][3][4]. Proanthocyanidin B2 exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic activities, and is also reported as a selective protein kinase C inhibitor[4][5]. Its mechanism of action is mainly through potent free radical scavenging (antioxidant), inhibition of advanced glycation end-products formation[3], attenuation of oxidative stress, and protection of cells against UV-induced oxidative damage and apoptosis, particularly in skin cells[5]. It has been studied primarily as a dietary polyphenol and in the context of plant-based supplements and food ingredients, with potential applications for oxidative stress-related conditions and skin photoprotection.
