Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Probimel is a commercial multi-strain probiotic supplement manufactured by Laboratorios Melder. It contains a blend of beneficial bacteria, including *Lactobacillus acidophilus*, *Lactobacillus casei*, *Lactobacillus rhamnosus*, *Lactobacillus plantarum*, *Bifidobacterium infantis*, *Bifidobacterium lactis*, *Bifidobacterium longum*, and *Streptococcus thermophilus*. In the context of chronic kidney disease (CKD), it has been investigated for its potential to modulate the gut-kidney axis, reduce uremic toxins like indoxyl sulfate, and lower pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ). While experimental models showed some reduction in inflammation and uremic toxins, clinical studies in patients with advanced CKD have not demonstrated significant improvements in kidney function or vascular calcification.
