Probiotics and Budesonide Combination

The combination of probiotics and budesonide is a therapeutic approach studied for various inflammatory conditions, particularly in gastrointestinal disorders. This combination leverages the anti-inflammatory properties of budesonide (a glucocorticoid available in various formulations including extended-release capsules, inhaled products, nasal spray, and rectal foam) with the beneficial effects of probiotics on gut health. Research suggests a potential synergistic effect. For example, a study on experimental colitis in rats showed the association of probiotics and budesonide in enemas increased cellularity and cell mass in the colonic mucosa [3, 5]. Clinical trials are ongoing, such as one investigating the efficacy and safety of probiotics combined with enteric-coated budesonide capsules in patients with IgA nephropathy [2, 4]. Probiotics commonly studied in inflammatory bowel disease, which include strains of Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, and Saccharomyces boulardii, have shown varying efficacy in IBD remission and improving clinical parameters [7]. It is noted that there is a moderate drug interaction between budesonide and probiotic formulas containing bifidobacterium infantis/lactobacillus acidophilus [1]. Standardized therapeutic protocols are currently lacking [7].
