The regimens involve combinations of procaine penicillin (a long-acting beta-lactam), gentamicin (an aminoglycoside), and amoxicillin (a broad-spectrum penicillin). Specifically, the trial tested a 7-day course of intramuscular (IM) gentamicin plus oral amoxicillin, and a switch therapy consisting of 2 days of IM procaine penicillin and gentamicin followed by 5 days of oral amoxicillin, comparing them to the standard 7-day IM procaine penicillin and gentamicin reference therapy.
